MACKINAC ISLAND SCOUT SERVICE TROOP 127
THE GOVERNOR'S HONOR GUARD 2020
THE GOVERNOR'S HONOR GUARD 2020
May 25, 2020 - May 30, 2020
What is this Troop?
Mackinac Island is one of the most visited spots in America. Mackinac Island is Michigan's Summer Capital, with the Governor in attendance on many days. Because of the nature of this operation, our emphasis is on SERVICE. We are a service troop.
Our contingent has been selected to serve the State of Michigan and the people that visit the Fort and the Island as guides. This places a heavy responsibility upon each scout and adult leader's appearance, conduct and performance of our assigned duties. Scouting, especially our contingent, is in the public eye. Scouting will be, and always has been, judged by the excellent or unfavorable impression each individual imparts to those with whom he comes in contact. There will never be a better opportunity to exemplify the living of the Scout Oath and Law than this service week on Mackinac Island.

Where do the boys come from?
Our troop is made up of boys from the whole of Water and Woods Field Council. Some boys come from nearby field councils. The sponsoring troop is Troop 127 from Lapeer. They are sponsored by the Men’s Club of Trinity United Methodist Church of Lapeer.
Is there anything special about this contingent?
Yes, we are able to have a Drum and Bugle Corp. that plays patriotic songs from the fort and over Marquette Park to the downtown. There had not been a Drum and Bugle Corp. for decades until our troop.
What do they do on the island?
Each boy is required to learn the history of Mackinac Island and the surrounding area. While the fort is open they help the fort staff at different posts serving as guides to the public and whatever is needed.
During this time the boys use their leadership skills and knowledge learned during the training period. The boys will be learning many historical facts about the island during training and will be using this information to share with others. They will be developing their communication skills. They will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.
The boys raise and lower the flags morning and night. The flags go up simultaneous and it is a beautiful site. Each patrol also does a service project and a patrol cleans Marquette Park each day. They also help by offering to take pictures for families so the family can be together in their memory photos.
This program has been around for many years for the Boys Scouts starting in August of 1929 and the Girl Scouts have been a part of this since 1974. The first contingents were made up of Eagle Scouts. The first troop had President Gerald R. Ford as a youth and Eagle Scout.
